Andrew Mangion Outlines EC's Restructuring of Learning Destinations

The last 12 months have been a challenging time for the EFL industry, bringing change and sacrifice to many, as we continually bolster ourselves against uncertainty.

After a careful internal and external restructuring exercise, EC has taken the decision to reshape its existing adult language school portfolio around the world and it will be closing the following schools indefinitely: Auckland, Australia, Oxford, Miami and Washington DC.

EC will continue to operate its remaining 22 adult and 30+ schools in 6 countries and 16 major cities around the world, together with its numerous junior programmes operating in 5 countries. We will also continue to invest in our online virtual language programmes and our new Virtual Reality offering, which will allow international students to access our award-winning language programmes from the comfort of their homes. All of this will be underpinned by the significant new investment and funding that EC secured in late 2020.

The Covid-19 Pandemic, which is now in its fifteenth month, has wrought havoc on our industry and many other travel related industries around the world, on a level never seen in living history. While we are confident that there is still strong demand for our industry and growing pent up demand to travel again, we believe that it will take time for student numbers to bounce back. We would rather have fewer numbers of schools and destinations but healthier student numbers in our schools and we want to right size our schools to this new reality.

In addition, we want to focus on the destinations that we believe are most open and willing to bounce back. Australia and New Zealand have clearly shut their borders indefinitely with no credible expectation as to when they will be re-opened. We strongly believe that running language centres in such an environment, particularly where such countries are no longer prepared to support the impacts that their border closures are having on our industry is unsustainable.

While these have not been easy decisions to make, we believe that they are the right ones. We look forward to working closely with our team, our students, and our agents to progress this great company and this exciting industry, that has brought so much value to international travel, education and global understanding.

Our team is populated with excellent talent and by continuing to work together to support our key destinations, I believe EC is very well placed to bounce back fast in a post-pandemic world.

If you have any queries or concerns and wish to speak to us directly, please reach out to us on hello@ecenglish.com and we’ll be glad to discuss with you. We value our relationship with each and every agent and consider you all a core element in the foundation of our company. Thank you for being an integral part of EC.
